Anthony Lowe's family has accused Huntington Park police of murder.

US authorities are investigating the killing of a man who had both legs amputated by California police after he was held at knifepoint before being shot.

Anthony Lowe, a young black man, was shot and killed in Los Angeles on January 26.

Police say he threatened someone after the stabbing, but Loya's mother said, "They killed my son."

It followed widespread outrage over the police killing of Tyree Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee.

Lowe's accident happened in Huntington Park, and was caught on camera by a passerby.

Dana's video shows part of the altercation with Lowe holding a long, shiny object and walking away from police in his clutches. Does not show clip shooting.

The Memphis Police Department was disbanded after Tyree Nichols' murder.

In a statement released Jan. 30, the Huntington Park Police Department said officers responded to the stabbing, and the victim provided a description of the suspect.

The suspect left his wheelchair, approached the victim and punched him in the chest before returning to the wheelchair and fleeing the scene.

The victim suffered "life-threatening injuries," a police statement said.

"Lou ignored the officer's verbal commands and threatened to come forward or throw a knife at the officers," according to the police statement.

Police say Lowe was shot after two failed attempts to use a Taser to subdue him.

Huntington Park Police Officer Hugo Renaga told the Los Angeles Times that investigators obtained video of the shooting from a nearby business, but did not plan to release the footage.

He added that officers in Huntington Park do not wear cameras on their jackets.

"He tried to run away, and every time he turned he made a motion like he was throwing a knife," he told the paper.

He added that the police tried to use electric stun guns, but that their efforts were unsuccessful, "they had to do something more effective."

Both officers involved in the incident were asked to take paid leave pending an investigation. Their names have not been released.

On Tuesday, Lowe's family members and activists demanded that the officers be held accountable for the shooting.

"They killed my son in a wheelchair without legs," Louie's mother, Dorothy, said at a news conference. "They have to do something about it."

A spokesperson for the family told the BBC affiliate CBC that Lou was suffering from mental problems at the time of the shooting.

Her sister told the Los Angeles Times that her legs were amputated after an encounter with police in Texas last year.

According to the Police Violence Map database, US police killed nearly 1,200 people in 2022. Officers have been charged in nine of these cases.
