Harvest 2022: Pictures of the most prominent events in the United Kingdom

A selection of the most powerful images taken by news agency photographers across the UK this year.
The year began with then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying people who thought the coronavirus pandemic was over were "very wrong", as the number of daily coronavirus infections in the UK passed 200,000 for the first time as the Omicron variant spread.

On 30 January, relatives of those killed on Bloody Sunday took part in a series of events to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the day 13 people were shot dead when soldiers opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in Derry, Northern Ireland.
Waves hit the harbor wall in Porthcawl, Wales, during Storm Eunice on February 18. Coastal areas in the southwest of England and south Wales, as well as the southeast of England, were on alert after severe weather warnings were issued.
Demonstrators in London and around the world showed their support for Ukraine after Russian forces launched an offensive in the country, firing missiles at cities and military targets.
British citizens of Iranian descent Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anousheh Ashouri have returned to the UK after their release from Iran. Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been held in Iran since 2016, accused of plotting to overthrow the country's government, which she denied. Ashouri was arrested in 2017 and charged with espionage, an allegation he denied.

The cross on The Cheven, which was first installed in the late 1960s, is now a symbol of Easter hope and has been raised again by church members and volunteers. A new cross was made in 2000, using wood salvaged from the bombed Arndale Center in Manchester.
In April, bad weather, the Easter holidays and the suspension of P&O Ferry flights led to congestion around the port of Dover, with freight trucks and heavy goods vehicles stuck on the roads.

In the same month, a TV presenter stood next to Larry the cat outside the Prime Minister's office (10 Downing Street) in London. At the time, Johnson was still in charge of the country, but turbulent months followed and he was forced to leave office in September.
Ronnie O'Sullivan equaled Stephen Hendry's record of seven World Snooker Championship titles with an 18-13 final victory over Judd Trump at The Crucible in Sheffield in May.
Thousands of Liverpool football fans lined the city streets to greet the team as they won the FA Cup and League Cup earlier in the season but lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in Paris.
The 75-year-old steamer, the Waverley, departed from Greenock for Arrochar on June 16, the same route it took on its maiden voyage in 1947. This is a photo of the ship, billed as the world's last sea paddle steamer, Loch Long in Arrochar, Scotland.

The Liberal Democrats won the by-elections at Tiverton and Honiton, ousting the Conservative Party's majority of over 24,000 votes.
